Maine’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained steady at 3.3% in May, the same level the state recorded in April and the same as in May 2018, according to data released Friday by the Maine Department of Labor and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The number of unemployed residents, 22,800, was little changed, down 300 from April.
May was the 41st consecutive month in which Maine’s unemployment rate has remained below 4%, the longest period on record.
The nationwide unemployment rate also stayed flat in May, unchanged from the April rate of 3.6%, according to the data.
In Maine, unemployment during May was lowest in Sagadahoc County, at 2.5%, and highest in Aroostook County, at 6%.
The unemployment rates in all three of Maine’s metro areas were below the statewide average: Portland-South Portland, 2.6%; Lewiston-Auburn, 3.1%; and Bangor, 3.1%.
Across New England, unemployment also averaged at 3.1% during May. Vermont’s rate was the lowest in the region, at 2.1%; New Hampshire’s was 2.4%; Massachusetts, 3%; Rhode Island, 3.6%; and Connecticut, 3.8%.
