Union theft leads to jail time

A Jonesport woman has been sentenced to eight months in prison for embezzling nearly $30,000 in coworkers' dues from a health care workers union in Washington County.

Bernadette Beal was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Bangor for stealing funds from the Teachers, AFL-CIO, Downeast Federation of Healthcare Professionals Local 5073 over a six-year period, according to the Bangor Daily News. The union represents workers at the Narraguagus Bay Health Care Facility, a nursing home in Milbridge. Beal was the sole person charged with overseeing the union funded by member dues, and from 2003 to 2009 wrote more than 200 checks from its bank account to pay for her own goods and services. She later attempted to cover up her thefts by forging signatures to make the payments seem valid.

Beal has already paid restitution.
