Union workers authorize strike at Woodland Pulp mill in Baileyville

The members of a union representing one third of the workers at a pulp mill in Baileyville voted this week to authorize a strike, but both union and mill officials say they want to avoid reaching that point.

The Bangor Daily News reported that representatives of United Steelworkers Local 27 workers at Woodland Pulp LLC and the mill will return to the negotiating table by the end of the year to resolve disagreements over a new contract.

A union representative told the BDN that the authorization to strike doesn’t mean the union intends to strike, but it shows there is the potential for a strike.

The union members have been working under the terms of the previous three-year contract, which expired in August. Two contract offers made by the mill were rejected, but the union representative wouldn’t comment what the disagreements were or to provide details of the offers.

The union represents about 113 workers at the mill.
