Unity names scientist new president

Unity College has named scientist Stephen Mulkey of Idaho as its new president, effective in July.

Mulkey is currently director of the environmental science program at the University of Idaho and has been internationally recognized for his work in ecology, according to a press release from the college. Mulkey succeeds Mitchell Thomashow, who resigned in December for unspecified reasons. Over the past few years, the environmental college has expanded its work in sustainability and its experiential environmental programs, and Mulkey's appointment provides the school "a legitimate place among the best small environmental colleges in the United States," board of trustees Chairman Tim Glidden said in the release.

Mulkey said he was impressed by the college's recent achievements and its recent national recognition. In 2010, Unity was one of 18 U.S. colleges and universities named to The Princeton Review's Green Rating Honor Roll, and the school is in the midst of building an energy-efficient dorm building built to Passive House standards expected to be ready for the 2011-2012 academic season.
