University of Maine to cut $9.7M

The University of Maine plans to tap $5.3 million in reserves and eliminate vacant faculty positions in order to make up its portion of $36 million in cuts across the state university system.

The Bangor Daily News reported the University of Maine System’s flagship campus in Orono would largely avoid layoffs through the new plan, cutting 30 vacant faculty spots and 31 non-faculty positions. The non-faculty cuts would involve at least five layoffs. Separately, the system expects additional savings by putting off some hiring and delaying some construction projects, the Portland Press Herald reported

In contrast with the University of Southern Maine, the Orono campus does not plan to cut any programs in the coming academic year. Of the $36 million in system-wide cuts, the University of Maine campus at Orono will reduce its $249 million budget by $13 million while USM will reduce its $140 million budget by $14 million.
