USDA awards 7 grants to ME orgs

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded seven grants to Maine organizations to strengthen rural economies and help farmers.

The grants include two from the USDA's "Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food" initiative, which helps organizations establish, expand and promote farmers markets and other direct producer-to-consumer marketing opportunities:

  • $31,739 to the Aroostook Band of Micmacs in Presque Isle
  • $68,450 to the Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association in Unity

The second set of grants was provided through USDA Rural Development's Rural Business Opportunity Grant program:

  • $11,460 to MaineStream Finance in Bangor
  • $115,000 to the Northern Maine Development Commission in Caribou
  • $50,000 to the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians Economic Development Co. in Littleton
  • $49,987 to the Penobscot Indian Nation Enterprises in Indian Island
  • $49,975 to the Four Directions Development Corp., a nonprofit that invests in Maine's four tribes
