USM ‘reimagining’ goals to meet money challenges
University of Southern Maine President Theodora Kalikow said the university has launched a six-month process to review its goals and priorities in the face of flat funding from the state, decreasing enrollment and increasing competition.
The Portland Press Herald reported that university administrators are holding a series of meetings with the campus community in order to compile a report by December to present to the University of Maine System Board of Trustees in January. That plan is to be implemented by August 2014.
At a meeting Tuesday, Kalikow declined to offer any specifics on what that plan might include, saying she wanted to approach the process open to all suggestions.
The meetings come after news broke last week of a draft plan to cut the university’s physics program, part of an effort to trim $5 million from USM’s $139 million budget. The school cut $5 million in spending last year as well.
