USM to trim $5M, staff cuts possible

The University of Southern Maine expects to cut $5 million from its budget for the coming year, a total that could include staff cuts.

The Portland Press Herald reports that USM President Theo Kalikow said Tuesday she has set preliminary cuts of $3.2 million from academic affairs and $1.8 million from administration.

Those cuts come in response to a state budget that calls for no increase in education funding, which Kalikow told the paper is "a signal that we have to think about how we're doing business."

The budget cuts for the upcoming year are just a part of the forecast, which projects USM will make a total $12.6 million in cuts over the next five years.

Kalikow told the paper she has asked for specific recommendations for cuts from deans and department heads and will submit a budget to the University of Maine System Board of Trustees in May.
