The Saco Industrial Innovation Center has been awarded a $25,000 matching grant by the Maine Technology Institute for development of sanitizing equipment that uses ultraviolet light to combat viral surface contaminants like coronavirus.
The center expects that the technology could benefit industry segments including medical facilities, large employers, restaurants, hospitality businesses and schools, according to a news release.
The goal is to produce a safe, easy-to-use conveyor sanitizer that can kill over 95% of surface viral matter of objects placed on the conveyor.
The development and testing of the equipment and an associated lab is housed at the innovation center in the Saco Mill Brook Business Park.
The founder of the center, Kevin Roche, is part of the development team, which includes Erik Goodwin, a former production engineer at local equipment manufacturers Homan Cooking Equipment and Belleco; and Louis Waterhouse and his L.A.W. Calibration team in Saco, for testing and lab design.
Roche co-founded Belleco and is a principal of BBK Investments, which focuses on property and startup companies.
“We all feel we must do something positive to provide a safe environment to the community in their work and school day,” Roche said in the release.
The initial prototype has been set up at the Biddeford Center of Technology for testing.
“Our team looks forward to further UV product development in the coming weeks ahead,” Roche added.
The Saco Industrial Innovation Center, at 10 Mill Brook Road in Saco, was established earlier this year to house entrepreneurs in a supportive, collaborative industrial and business park.
