A former vacuum salesman in Gray has been sentenced to 18 months in prison and fined $86,476 for tax evasion-related charges connected to his business.
Nathanial Dupuis, 41, pleaded guilty to multiple counts of theft by misapplication, intentional sales tax evasion and other charges last August. The Maine Attorney General’s office announced his sentencing in a press release on Tuesday.
The charges stemmed from Dupuis keeping more than $80,000 in sales tax money while he was selling Kirby brand vacuums under two businesses he owned and operated. The Attorney General’s office said his tax evasion activities had been traced back to 2004.
The state also found that Dupuis failed, in some cases, to deliver new vacuums or provide refunds to paying customers, three of which he eventually paid back. In addition, the state found Dupuis had been selling vacuums while waiting his prison sentence, a violation of his sentencing agreement, and was failing to comply with an interim repayment plan.
