Vassalboro farmer gets $300K for 'hay logs'

Vassalboro farmer Peter Bragdon has won a $300,000 federal grant to develop a heating fuel source from unusable feed hay called hay logs.

U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree announced in a press release that Bragdon won the grant through a U.S. Department of Agriculture program supporting value-added producers.

"Times are tough for a lot of farmers, and being able to take what is essentially a worthless product and turn it into something that can produce a little income is pretty important in keeping us in business," Bragdon said in a prepared statement.

He said the grant will provide needed capital to begin production of the hay logs, which can be burned in fireplaces or woodstoves.

Bragdon says he hopes to hire up to seven people at full production.
