Vegas company sues Brunswick restaurant over name
A Las Vegas nightclub chain is suing the owners of a new restaurant in Brunswick over its name.
TAO Licensing LLC has filed a complaint against the restaurateurs, saying that in 2001 it registered "TAO" as a trademark associated with its restaurants and in 2010 with its entertainment venues, the Portland Press Herald reported.
The owners say their use of the word "tao" refers to a different Chinese character — meaning "peach" — than the Las Vegas entertainment chain, which the Brunswick business owners said uses the word as a reference to the philosophical religion of Taoism.
The Press Herald reported that the Las Vegas entity is seeking damages from the Brunswick restaurant, claiming trademark dilution, infringement, unfair competition and cybersquatting — for the use of the address tao-maine.com.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the Brunswick owners have hired a lawyer in response to the lawsuit.
