Verso requests more time for required boiler upgrade

Verso Paper Corp. has asked the Maine Department of Environmental Protection for six more months to address an emission problem with a boiler at its Bucksport mill.

The Ellsworth American reported company officials have asked the DEP’s Bureau of Air Quality Control to extend the Aug. 15 deadline to Feb. 15, 2014, for monitoring the boiler’s efficiency.

The paper reported that Verso’s No. 8 boiler, part of a $45 million renewable energy project, has not performed as well as engineers first predicted.

A DEP official told the paper that the boiler’s design seems to be the problem and the department is drafting language to allow the extension, which will be the subject of a future public hearing.
