Vote could leave $85M state budget hole

The U.S. Senate's vote against a federal jobs bill last week could leave Maine scrambling to fill an $85 million budget hole.

The bill would have allocated $85 million in expected Medicaid contributions to Maine, an amount already worked into the state's $2.6 million budget for the next budget year, set to begin July 1, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. David Farmer, Gov. John Baldacci's spokesman and deputy chief of staff, told MPBN the state next month could begin looking for ways to cut the budget if Congress is unable to reach an agreement over the Medicaid contributions.

The Senate's decision Thursday also nixed extending unemployment benefits, expected to impact about 30,000 jobless Mainers who will have exhausted their benefits by the end of the year.
