Watchdog files complaint against Plum Creek
Plum Creek Timberlands’ certification for sustainable logging practices is being challenged by an Oregon-based watchdog group seeking a nationwide investigation.
The timber management company owns approximately 865,000 acres of timberland in Maine, but the challenge is based on its operations in Oregon.
The Associated Press reported that The Center for Sustainable Economy filed a complaint on Thursday with Sustainable Forestry Initiative, the nonprofit organization that verifies “green lumber” certification for environmentally friendly timber producers.
In its complaint, the watchdog group demands that the nonprofit strip Plum Creek of its “green lumber” certification and conduct a nationwide investigation, citing 11 civil citations for violating state logging regulations in the past six years at Plum Creek’s operation in Oregon.
Kate Tate, a spokeswoman for Plum Creek, said the timber company is reviewing the complaint. She added, “Plum Creek is committed to practicing sustainable forestry wherever we operate, including in Maine. There is an established process in place through [SFI] and we will engage fully in SFI’s process to understand and address the complaint.”
