Weather stymies Aroostook County snowmobile industry
Aroostook County lodgings have experienced room cancellations due to poor snowmobile trail conditions.
The Aroostook Republic reported there hasn’t been enough snow to support snowmobiling. “I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s had a bunch of cancellations,” Steve Dobson, owner of the Aroostook Hospitality Inns in Washburn and in Van Buren, told the newspaper.
Among comments in the Dec. 27 report of the Maine Snowmobile Association are the following pertaining to Aroostook County: “Trails have become very hard and icy and some are completely gone until we receive more snow.... A few clubs have gone out and tried to scratch the hard snow, and filled in water bars and washouts, but majority of the clubs are waiting until the next storm to get back out.”
In Caribou, “Woods are hard with not much snow.”
In Fort Kent, “Grooming is suspended until more snow. Trails are passable with ice and dirt spots please use caution.” “Fort Fairfield will resume when more snow.” “Central Aroostook Snowmobile club will not be back out until more snow…..the roads are down to ice and dirt.”
Maine has 14,000 miles of snowmobile trails, “regarded by riders from across the country as the finest in the Northeast,” according to the association.
