Weatherization program on track

More than 1,300 homes in Maine have benefited so far from $42 million in federal stimulus funds targeting home weatherization.

MaineHousing, which is overseeing the program, said this week that 1,343 homes have been weatherized, with 522 additional under way, and $8 million so far has been spent, according to the Kennebec Journal. The agency is on track to meet the goal it set with the U.S. Department of Energy, which is to weatherize 4,400 homes by the end of the program. MaineHousing says it has created the equivalent of 163 full-time jobs from the program, but the exact number of people employed is hard to identify, since the data include a number of part-time jobs held by the same person working for multiple contractors.

Another $8 million is slated for training energy auditors and technicians, and so far $200,000 has been spent on training, most through Kennebec Valley Community College, according to the paper.
