Webber Energy Fuels in Bangor recently sold six of its stores to Irving Oil, a first step in the company's effort to get out of the gas station business.
Irving Oil purchased six Webber Energy gas stations in Orono, Bangor, Freeport, Falmouth and North Windham, according to a press release from Irving. Mike Shea, president and CEO of Webber Energy, told the Bangor Daily News that his company will focus on its core heating oil and propane business and wholesale gasoline distribution operation. He said Irving has rehired the approximately 70 former Webber gas station employees, according to the newspaper. Irving Oil operates 121 gas stations in Maine and 55% of the marine terminal in South Portland that supplies gas to fuel stations in Maine and New Hampshire. A spokesman for Irving told the newspaper that the company plans to expand its presence in Maine.
Shea told the Daily News that Webber Energy is now looking to sell its remaining half dozen stores.
