Pike Industries is facing a $3,000 fine for blasting at its quarry in Westbrook that violated a consent agreement it reached with the city and neighboring businesses.
The city fined the company for a May 17 blast that exceeded vibration and noise limits dictated by the agreement approved by Pike, Idexx Laboratories and city officials last August, according to the Portland Press Herald. A blast on May 20 was performed 40 minutes after the 3 p.m. deadline. The blasting was part of the company's work to build an access road to its quarry off Spring Street, and the company must now install buffers before it can blast rock in the quarry. The agreement allows Pike eight blasts a year to produce rock, according to the paper.
The agreement reached last year ended years of controversy over Pike's operations near the Five Star Industrial Park. Idexx had opposed the company's blasting, saying it would scrap plans for a $50 million expansion if the company was permitted to continue quarrying. Meanwhile, Pike battled the city's decision to rezone the industrial park to limit its operations.
