A citizens group in Westbrook has formed to support Pike Industries in its dispute with the city and neighboring businesses over its proposed construction of an asphalt plant, according to a press release from the group.
The group, Citizens for Balanced Growth in Westbrook, says it is concerned with the situation that has developed between Pike and the city and calls efforts to prevent Pike from operating its quarry "unfair." The Westbrook City Council has proposed rezoning the area where Pike has operated a quarry for more than 50 years to prevent it from building a $5 million asphalt plant. Pike recently sued Westbrook in an attempt to prevent the city from considering the rezoning.
"We think Westbrook needs a mix of good jobs, not just white collar jobs," former State Rep. Ron Usher, the chairman of the new group, said in a press release. "We think the businesses in the Five Star Industrial Park should work together to create jobs and keep jobs in Westbrook."
