Western Maine Transportation seeks to improve service

Western Maine Transportation Services is seeking public input on how to improve its rural and urban public transportation options.

The Advertiser Democrat reported that WMTS has launched an online survey.

“We’re looking forward to analyzing the results of the survey so we can make our services more relevant to more people,” WMTS’s community relations director, Craig Zurhorst, told the newspaper.

In a statement, WMTS General Manager Sandy Buchanan said the region needs more transportation options for commuting to work and education, and for everyday needs, the paper reported.

According to its website, WMTS, headquartered in Auburn, is a nonprofit public transportation corporation established by statute in 1976 and serving Western Maine with public, wheelchair-accessible, “green” paratransit bus service in and around the more populated regions of its service area. The WMTS Community Rides program in Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin Counties, Livermore and Livermore Falls, are funded by the United Way of Androscoggin County, United Way of Oxford County and United Way of the Tri-Valley Area. The ElderRides program for transportation to medical appointments is funded by Seniors Plus throughout the three counties.

“Paratransit” refers to special transportation services for people with disabilities, often provided as a supplement to fixed-route bus and rail systems by public transit agencies.

WMTS also operates the Lisbon Connection bus service for the eponymous town and the Lewiston-Auburn citylink bus service for the Lewiston-Auburn Transit Committee. WMTS is the operator of the Brunswick Explorer “flexroute” service, and the Bethel/Sunday River Mountain Explorer and Sugarloaf Explorer seasonal bus services.
