A exhibit opening next week at the Maine Historical Society will look at the history of the paper industry in Maine, but also ask what’s next.
“Making Paper, Making Maine,” which opens June 2, will look at the “historic transition taking place” in Maine’s paper industry, which has undergone significant upheaval in recent years.
Paper has “shaped Maine’s economy, molded individual and community identities and impacted the environment throughout Maine,” the organization said, but faces uncertainty going forward.
The exhibit highlights the Otis Falls Pulp Co., which opened in Jay in 1888, and was one of the most modern facilities at the time, connected to global markets. For more than a century, Maine was an international leader in the manufacturing of pulp and paper.
MHS Director Steve Bromage, who curated the exhibit, will make remarks at the June 2 opening, at 6:15 p.m. The exhibit is free.
The Maine Historical Society is at 489 Congress St. in Portland.
