Bragging rights for creator of the “world’s best lobster roll” are on the line as 12 chefs compete for that title in Down East Magazine’s Lobster Roll Festival that will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Thompson’s Point in Portland.
The competition, the first-ever large-scale contest in Maine showcasing the state’s iconic snack, will be the anchor event to a larger family-friendly afternoon of activity that will include everything from live music to an interactive kid’s area to Maine-made vendors and refreshments. A project of Down East magazine, the Down East Lobster Roll Festival seeks to illuminate the spirit and culture of Maine by offering an afternoon of some good old-fashioned summer fun.
The 12 semi-finalists competing for the "world's best" title are:
The festival will celebrate Maine's iconic snack by giving back to Maine's lobstering community — $4 of every lobster roll sold will go to the Maine Lobstermen's Community Alliance, whose mission is to foster thriving coastal communities and preserve Maine’s lobstering heritage.
This charitable component is made possible by the sponsorship of Ready Seafood Co. in Portland, which buys and sells more than 15 million pounds of live and processed lobster a year. The Ready brothers, who grew up in Cape Elizabeth and have been lobstering since they were 9, have generously donated all the lobster meat for the festival, which is close to 300 pounds.
