Will dividing a longtime downtown Ellsworth property lure businesses?

The owners of a 9,000-square-foot-building on Main Street in Ellsworth that was the former home of J&B Atlantic are hoping that dividing the building into five smaller spaces will attract new businesses to downtown.

Bill Sanborn and Jon Hutchins, who have owned the 142 Main St. building for 19 years, have received preliminary approval for the subdivision plan from Ellsworth’s Planning Board, The Ellsworth American reports.

Sanborn told the board that Northern Lights Dance Arts has already laid claim to the largest of the subdivision, a 2,162-square-foot space, and that a second tenant is in line for a second space. The submitted plan shows the remaining divisions ranging from 749 square feet to 2,008 square feet, according to the newspaper.

The planning board will make a final decision about the subdivision plan in August.
