Will Richmond emerge as a foodie town?

On its website the riverfront town of Richmond prides itself on being “A Small Town with a Big Heart” — with lovely vistas, proximity to shopping and cultural offerings in Topsham and Augusta and a priority on business growth as a certified business-friendly community.

That outlook is paying off with the arrival of two new restaurants, Kimberly's Restaurant and Lounge and the Village Café, which are reviving two older restaurant spaces in downtown Main Street, the Morning Sentinel reported.

Kimberly’s will take over the former Railway Café space; the latter closed abruptly before Christmas. The Village Cafe at 164 Main St. opened the day after Christmas.

Village Café owner Susan Campbell told the paper that senior citizens for whom she cooked at Richmond’s Golden Oldies Senior Center encouraged her to open her own restaurant.

“They approached me because they didn’t have a place to go that felt like home,” she said.

When the space became available, friends and family helped her remake the space, including building a counter low enough that senior citizens can sit there comfortably.
