Wilmington Trust Co. has hired Michael Smith as a senior wealth advisor in its Portland office.
Smith will provide wealth management advice to high-net-worth clients throughout New England, working closely with them to develop financial strategies to meet their current needs and plan for their long-term objectives.
Smith brings more than 30 years of international wealth management experience to his new role. He has previously worked with clients in Washington, D.C., London, Edinburgh and the Middle East.
“I’m extremely excited to be joining Wilmington Trust’s growing team in Portland. Having grown up on Peaks Island — and after several global positions in finance — it’s great to be back home in Maine supporting entrepreneurs, family businesses and nonprofits,” Smith told Mainebiz.
“With the amount of wealth transferring to younger generations from Portland to Bangor to Lewiston and the number of Maine business owners who are thinking about their families’ futures, we see tremendous opportunities for growth in the state,” he continued.
Prior to joining Wilmington Trust, Smith held leadership positions at JP Morgan Private Bank, Société Générale Hambros, Dresdner Kleinwort and Merrill Lynch International Bank Ltd.
Smith is engaged with numerous philanthropic organizations. He serves as a veteran transition mentor with the Station Foundation and as an ambassador with the Allied Forces Foundation. He is a board member and chair of the finance committee for Housing Unlimited, a mental health housing charity in Maryland and a member of the finance committee for the University of Hartford Board of Regents.
Smith also is a trustee and secretary for the Entrepreneurial Scotland Foundation and is a member of the Global Scot network.
He received his bachelor’s degree in political science and government from the University of Hartford and his master’s in international relations from the American University.
Wilmington Trust provides wealth and institutional services for M&T Bank and is headquartered in Wilmington, Del.
