Wilson Stream Properties said it will pony up $15,000 to attract entrepreneurial tenants to its downtown building via a contest for the best business idea for the 430 Main St. in Wilton, according to the Kennebec Journal.
The 430 Main St. building, which is a long, sprawling white building, according to the newspaper, is the former home of Wilton Hardware and one of a few remaining empty storefronts in Wilton’s downtown.
Local businessmen Josh Michaud and Jeff Chaisson own the building. That includes 2,000 square feet of retail space on the first floor and the two apartments upstairs. All are part of their property management company, Wilson Stream Properties, the Kennebec Journal said.
It hasn’t been easy to draw people to start a business in Wilton, so the two owners told the newspaper they knew they’d have to be creative, hence the contest.
“The town of Wilton is definitely going through some revitalization, (and) we wanted to hopefully bring in something unique to this area,” Michaud told the newspaper.
Initial business pitches are due by Sept. 9 and will include an application submitted to Wilson Stream Properties’ website, wilsonstreamproperties.com, stating the business proposal in a paragraph. A committee including Chaisson, Michaud, Town Manager Rhonda Irish and others will pick the top five applicants by Sept. 23. Phase 2 of the competition will require a business plan submission by Oct. 21, the newspaper said, with the winner to be announced by Nov. 25.
