Winthrop workers eligible for TAA funds

Fifty-one workers laid off earlier this year from Alternative Manufacturing in Winthrop are now eligible for job retraining and other benefits.

The workers are eligible for benefits under the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, after the U.S. Department of Labor found that sales of the company's electronic printed circuit boards dropped as the result of foreign competition, U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud announced in a press release. Alternative Manufacturing CEO Kim Vandermeulen told the Kennebec Journal that the company had about 150 employees until the 51 workers were let go in April, after one of its largest customers, a Canadian company, transferred a large portion of its work to a Toronto plant.

Vandermeulen said more layoffs are expected in the next couple of weeks, and that the plant will have about 50 workers following additional cuts and attrition.
