The Wiscasset Water District received funding from the USDA Rural Development office totaling $4.3 million for infrastructure upgrades on nearly 13,000 feet of century-old water lines.
“This important project will ensure over a thousand Maine residents have access to the most basic human necessity: clean, safe drinking water,” USDA Rural Development State Director Virginia Manuel said in a statement. “I am pleased that USDA Rural Development can assist the impacted communities in maintaining their quality of life through investing in properly working infrastructure.”
The funding, which comes from a water and waste disposal loan in the amount of $3.2 million and a grant in the amount of $1.15 million, will be used on deteriorating water mains in the downtown section of Wiscasset.
The Wiscasset Water District serves Wiscasset, Woolwich and Davis Island in Edgecomb. The funded project will serve a population of 1,361 residential, municipal and light commercial users.
