A Canadian-based power transmission company has proposed building an underwater electricity transmission line from Wiscasset to Boston.
Transmission Developers Inc., based in Toronto, last night unveiled plans for the $1 billion Maine Express project to the Wiscasset Planning Board, according to a press release from the company. The 160-mile-long, 1,000-megawatt transmission line would send electricity generated in Wiscasset to a station in Boston. The company claims the line would ease transmission congestion, improve system reliability in Maine and allow the state to develop more renewable energy projects.
The project would be located on former Maine Yankee Atomic Power Co. land, which was purchased in 2004 by Greenwich, Conn.-based real estate development company National RE/sources. One of Transmission Developer's major shareholders is John Douglas, CEO of Toronto-based Riverbank Power Corp., which last month announced plans to build a $2 billion hydroelectric generation facility on the same property.
