With $100K boost, scone business will scale beyond the midcoast

The Scone Goddess, a midcoast business with national ambitions, has been awarded a $100,000 federal grant to finance its next growth phase.

Funding comes from a Community Development Block Grant sponsored by Northport, the Waldo County town of 1,600 people where the business is based, between Belfast and Lincolnville.

The Scone Goddess, founded by Veronica Stubbs in 2020, sells 70 flavors of fresh-baked scones to local customers and 22 scone mixes to retail and wholesale customers. The mixes, whose flavors include raspberries-and-cream and double-chocolate cherry, require only the addition of heavy cream.

Stubbs told Mainebiz she plans to use the $100,000 grant for a van, packing machines, additional storage and ingredients.

“Funds will be used to continue scaling up and increase our reach across the United States,” she said. “We could not be prouder to have our business growing and thriving in such a beautiful town.”

The company has a staff of six full-time employees and will be hiring a second shift in the coming three months.

James Kossuth, Northport’s town administrator, told Mainebiz that when Stubbs approached the Select Board last summer asking for support to apply for the grant, the board agreed right away.

“We all could not be more thrilled to see her get the full $100,000 to help her continue to grow and be a powerfully positive presence in the town," he said.

“Veronica has been a tremendous asset and cheerleader for the town in so many ways and it has been a joy to watch the business grow, from the trailer in the parking lot, to the small building, to the slightly larger building, to the still larger building,” he added.

"In each of the last two years, she has generously donated scones to the town's annual spring clean-up, helping build community through delicious baked goods."

Kossuth also gave Stubbs a shout-out for organizing a Northport business group for local owners to exchange advice and to collaborate on projects.
