Wood shortage halts mill

A shortage in wood supply has led to a short-term shutdown of Red Shield Environmental's pulp mill in Old Town.

The company on Thursday stopped work for what was expected to be a four-day shutdown due to a low inventory of wood chips and debris, which is used as fuel for the mill's biomass boiler and provides power and electricity, according to the Bangor Daily News. Red Shield spokesman Dan Bird told the paper the shutdown will allow the company to rebuild its supplies. The time off will be unpaid for Red Shield's current 190 employees.

Red Shield plans on Tuesday to restart production at the mill, which it purchased from Georgia-Pacific Corp. in 2006, according to the paper.
