Woodcock takes over at harness racing association

Chandler Woodcock, a former Maine senator and 2006 Republican gubernatorial candidate, is the new executive director of the Maine Harness Horseman's Association.

The former high school English teacher said in a statement that the sport of harness racing in Maine has improved over the years, but there is still work to do. "The future is brighter, but we must not be lulled into complacency by revenues that could be altered," he said. "The racing industry must coalesce because there is truly strength in numbers."

Woodcock served three terms in the state Senate before leaving to run for governor in 2006. He finished second behind incumbent Gov. John Baldacci.
