Work force bill now faces funding challenge

A bill to invest $5 million in work force development over the next two years has sailed through the Legislature, but where it will fit in the next two-year budget remains uncertain.

The Kennebec Journal reported the Senate on Tuesday gave unanimous approval to LD 90, which outlines funding and new programs at state universities and community colleges intended to enhance job training in Maine.

The bill outlines a spending plan of $9.4 million over four years, but the Legislature's appropriations committee will consider just the next two years as it adjusts the next state budget, which begins in July.

House Minority Leader Kenneth Fredette, R-Newport, told the paper that the work force bill has the potential of "putting more pressure on what is already a tense atmosphere on a very difficult budget."
