Workers idled at National Semiconductor

National Semiconductor Corp. this week laid off 40 people at its South Portland manufacturing plant, part of a companywide restructuring plan that will eliminate 1,725 jobs, or more than one-quarter of its global work force.

After posting a 31% decline in sales, to $292 million, in its quarter that ended March 1, the Santa Clara, Calif.-based semiconductor manufacturer said Wednesday that it would immediately lay off 850 positions worldwide, followed by further consolidation at its manufacturing facilities that will affect another 850 positions, according to a press release. The company said it would close manufacturing plants in China and Texas.

Despite the layoffs in South Portland, a spokesperson for National told Portland's WMTW that the South Portland plant will gain more work following the closure of the plant in Arlington, Texas.
