Birkel has been with Wright-Pierce for over three decades. During his time as executive vice president, he was also the wastewater practice group leader. He has been transitioning into his new role for the past five years.

“I started my career at Wright-Pierce in 1990 and have experienced four CEO transitions during that time, this one included,” said Birkel. “Our plan is to remain a legacy firm for our employees and our focus on succession planning and ownership transition affords us this luxury. While each new CEO brings different initiatives and ideas to the table, I plan to focus on our people, our processes, and maintaining technical excellence in our work products as we grow and expand into new geographic areas.”

Birkel received his bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Maine and received his master's in business administration from Southern New Hampshire University.

Wright-Pierce is an award-winning, multidiscipline engineering firm that has been providing drinking water, wastewater, and civil infrastructure services since 1947. Employee-owned and operated, the firm is made up of more than 300 engineers and support professionals located in offices throughout the Northeast and Florida. Wright-Pierce is ranked No.1  among the largest engineering firms in the 2023 Mainebiz Book of Lists. The rankings are based on the number of Maine-based engineers. The firm has 55 licensed engineers and 114 employees in Maine.
