Yacht co. trims 25

The Hinckley Co. has announced it will lay off 25 employees from its Trenton production facility, marking the second round of cuts at the plant in three months.

Ed Roberts, vice president for marketing and product development, attributed the layoffs to the faltering economy. Orders for Hinckley's luxury sailing yachts and powerboats did not increase as hoped at the end of 2008, he told the Bangor Daily News. Roberts said the company hopes to reemploy the workers if it can ramp up its production schedule once the economy recovers, the paper reported. The move reduces to 215 the number of workers Hinckley has in Maine. Last October, Hinckley laid off 49 people at the plant, or 9% of the company's work force. More than half of its approximately 550 employees work at Hinckley facilities outside of Maine, at locations in Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

Hinckley Yachts was founded in 1928 in Southwest Harbor, where it operates a brokerage office, a service yard and other nonmanufacturing operations.
