Florida-based luxury yacht manufacturer Marlow Yachts has backed out of proposal to buy the Boat School in Eastport, leaving its future in question.
David Marlow of Marlow Yachts informed city officials this week he is scrapping plans to buy the Deep Cove Marine and Boat School facility and establish a marine trades program and yacht manufacturing facility, according to the Bangor Daily News. Marlow first pitched his plan last October, saying it would create 100 jobs. City officials were surprised by Marlow's decision and told the paper plans to sell the facility to him for $850,000 were still on track. Marlow did not say why he has pulled out of the project. The city has been leasing the Boat School to Husson since 2007, but the Bangor-based university plans to end its lease next year. Even with Husson's lease, the city still loses $150,000 annually on the facility. The city plans to market the Deep Cove Marine property, according to the paper.
Marlow is a seasonal resident of Brooksville, and his company employs 750 people at its marine service facility in Tampa Bay, Fla., as well as 1,000 employees at a Taiwan shipyard.
