York County assesses impacts of layoffs

People in York County are still trying to assess how the county's layoff of 24 employees, including seven sheriff deputies and six clerks in the district attorney's office, will impact the region.

York County laid off the employees on Monday to address a $1.3 million hole in the county budget. District Attorney Mark Lawrence told the Portland Press Herald that cutting six clerks in his office will severely slow the criminal justice system in the county. He said he is looking into the legal ramifications of the county's failure to meet its statutory requirement to provide his office with adequate staffing and office space, the paper reported. County officials also admitted the reduction in sheriff deputies will slow police response time.

York County avoided eliminating 40 positions in July, but said at the time it was only delaying the inevitable, according to Current Publishing.
