The Maine Turnpike Authority unanimously voted this week to finalize the first phase of a study to relocate the York Toll Plaza on Interstate 95 and send it to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for review.
The study includes four options for how to proceed with revamping the aging toll plaza: replace the existing toll plaza at its current location; relocate the new toll plaza to mile marker 8.7; place the new toll plaza at mile marker 9.1; or go with a "no build" option. The state agency wants to replace the 41-year-old toll plaza with a modern plaza that will provide open road tolling for EZ-Pass motorists, according to an authority press release. The Army Corps of Engineers will select a preferred plan.
Relocating the toll plaza has been contentious in York, since it would require taking at least 7 acres of private land, according to Seacoast Online. York selectmen and members of a citizens' group called Think Again will make their case to the Army Corps of Engineers to support the "no build" option. The Army Corps of Engineers will accept public comment for the next three months.
