A company's support of a civic cause or nonprofit can become a lightning rod for public outcry. Corporate websites and social media have been hijacked by partisan rhetoric. Storefronts are sometimes the battlefronts of protestors with clashing political viewpoints.
And there's another risk: Customers and employees get distracted by all of this.
Perhaps the impact is simply the cost to living and doing business in a free society. One thing is clear, however. With Maine primaries this week and the U.S. general election now less than five months away, such downsides to democracy will continue to increase.
