Paying taxes probably isn't high on anyone's list of favorite activities, but Maine Revenue Services is apparently trying to make the duty less onerous.

The Maine Tax Portal is a new online system for filing, paying and managing state taxes. The system is being rolled out in stages, and this week adds the ability to handle 20 more of Maine's existing taxes, fees and programs. With this addition, for example, Mainers can now pay Individual Income Tax through the Maine Tax Portal.

The portal replaces and expands the state's current online services, including I-File and EZ Pay, but doesn't affect individual taxpayers who use self-service software to prepare and file their returns. The state says the Maine Tax Portal will make it easier for business and individuals to manage payments, check on refunds, view bills and notices, and perform other tax tasks.

In 1986, US President Ronald Reagan said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help." Would our taxes decrease if the state stopped having half-baked programs like I-File and EZ Pay and fired those staff and consultants? I bet you we could all buy Turbo Tax each year for less than this new program cost us in taxes.

Hopefully, it is more user friendly than the current system.

However, we use Turbo Tax. Will they know about the Maine Tax Portal?
