MEMA Technical Education Center brings the HVAC trades to high schools across Maine. The increasing need in a growing field for well-trained technicians in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (also known as HVAC-R) is plentiful across the state of Maine. According to Stepwise Data Research conducted in 2018, there are 5,000 jobs as a direct result of the heating fuel industry and 4,500 indirect jobs. There are almost 10,000 jobs in the state of Maine alone and more jobs being created every day. It is for this reason that the industry was inspired to create MEMA Technical Education Center (MTEC).

Expanded training facility: In the summer and fall of 2018, MTEC expanded their school to 4,000 square feet, creating the largest HVAC training lab in New England whereby students would receive a comprehensive hands-on training. “The thoroughness of the hands-on training is unlike what you would get anywhere else in the Northeast,” says MEMA’s VP, Megan Diver.

Outreach: MTEC has made it a priority to have a presence at career and college fairs as well as presenting to Maine high school classes about HVAC and the importance of learning a trade. The MTEC staff explains, “it is important to educate students who might not want the expense for a two or four-year college degree programs. An MTEC education will ensure them a job after graduation as well as a stable work with competitive pay. We have been overwhelmed by the support of staff and teachers throughout the state who understand that not all students will find success in traditional education.”

We welcome field trips: MTEC encourages high schools and technical institutes across the state to reach out to schedule class field trips to their training facility or have an MTEC representative come speak to the students directly.

Job placement: Since their expansion in late 2018, MTEC has added two new instructors and is offering up to five full HVAC-R training programs each year. Being industry owned has created a 95% job placement making the program a great success. This is a win-win situation for the companies in need of good technicians and for students learning a trade.

Classes offered: Classes range from Oil Technician Training, to A/C Refrigeration & Troubleshooting, to Propane and Natural Gas Appliance Install and Service, as well as Heat Pump Training. MTEC also provides a semester-long 500-hour HVAC Pro class that will prepare students to qualify for Maine State Licensing in an accelerated time frame. Completion of the 6-week Oilheat Technician Training course will eliminate six months of apprenticeship time required by the state for licensing. This program also provides students propane and natural gas certification necessary for state licensure and EPA Universal 608 Air Conditioning Certification. The full training costs 13,500 and financial assistance resources are available.
