MVH remains committed to being a Provider of Choice, an Employer of Choice and a Veterans Advocate. Providing exceptional and expert care for Veterans, their spouses and Gold Star parents continues to be at the forefront of all that we do. While COVID-19 has presented challenges in doing this, we have persevered and we continue to offer our Veterans the best possible care. Whether it’s long term care, short term skilled nursing care, memory care or rehabilitative services, our team develops customized care plans for each resident. Staff are honored to care for America’s heroes and are guided every day by our Core Values: Honesty & Integrity, Veterans are Unique, Respect, Excellence, Teamwork and Lead the Way.
We continue with efforts to modernize our facilities and are eager to introduce our new Augusta Home, which will open spring/summer of 2021. Based on the small-house model of care delivery, the new Home will feature all private resident rooms, 10-15 rooms per household, open spaces for family and community interaction, modern and state-of-the-art treatment facilities and a “Main Street” with a theater, ice cream shop, Veterans’ club, bank and more.
As an independent nonprofit organization, MVH relies on the generosity of individuals and organizations to help us provide activities and programs that keep our residents happy and engaged. Every donation made to MVH, unless noted otherwise, will go to supporting residents in this way. You can download a copy of our Community Fundraising Guide at mainevets.org/community-fundraising, which provides many ways to support our Veterans. In addition to community events and online campaigns, there were a number of fundraising events that this year were modified due to the coronavirus, including two of our signature events: the Maine Vets 5K was held virtually and the ME Vets Annual Car Show was canceled. Each of our Homes have “wish lists” on our website that provide ways for those interested in supporting Maine Veterans with gifts from $10 to $10,000. Some changes to our wish lists this year include iPads and other devices to allow our residents to have virtual visits with their families.
Our “Home For Heroes Campaign” is the largest capital campaign in our history and is in support of our new Augusta replacement Home. It is currently under construction and will open in the Small House model of care in 2021. It will provide residents care in a home-like setting, featuring private rooms centered around shared living and dining spaces. Also featured is a “Main Street” with an ice cream shop, Veterans’ Club, children’s space, bank and more.
Donation recognition opportunities exist from resident rooms and gathering areas such as the chapel, household dens, dining rooms and kitchens to select outdoor elements. This innovative project gives donors a way to be part of changing the way we care for Veterans today and for generations to come.
The Maine Veterans’ Homes Community Fundraising Guide offers step-by-step instructions on how individuals – children and adults alike – community groups and businesses can raise money for residents at Maine Veterans’ Homes.
It offers fundraising ideas at all levels that range from online opportunities and community events to business-specific fundraising initiatives. It also details the ways Maine Veterans’ Homes is happy to offer its assistance in your community fundraising efforts. This guide can be requested by mail or downloaded from our website.
Annually, Maine Veterans’ Homes sends out appeal letters seeking support for our Resident Activities Funds. Our largest appeal is sent in November and includes our annual Heroes Calendar where we feature photos and the life stories of two residents from each of our Homes. You can sign up to join this mailing list on our website.
Each of our Homes accepts gifts of cash and checks at the front desks. Donations can also be sent to our central office. We frequently accept gifts in kind, but ask that you call in advance so we can make sure we are the best recipient for your item(s). Gifts via credit card can be made at the Homes or securely on our website. Our Development Office also works with donors who are interested in making estate donations, setting up endowments, annuities, donating real estate, and those interested in giving via multiple other ways.
Giving the gift of time is rewarding for both volunteers and residents at MVH. During COVID-19, however, these special visitors haven’t been able to enter the Homes for safety reasons. Before COVID, however, we frequently welcomed businesses and service organizations to help with cookouts and events. Additionally, many individuals have become valued members of our MVH volunteer team. Once guidelines allow volunteers to enter the Homes again, opportunities include being an event helper, an escort on outings, visitor/companion, mail deliverer, appointment driver or you could help residents engage in gardening, arts and crafts, reading and more. If you would like one of our activities coordinators to contact you about becoming a volunteer, please visit our website. In the meantime, folks are welcome to write letters to our residents by visiting mainevets.org/covid19.
