More than 35 years after lifelong friends Tom Wright and John Ryan founded the company, Wright-Ryan has grown to become one of the largest and most respected construction firms in northern New England. The firm has centered its business on work that enhances the region’s cities, towns, and neighborhoods, while engaging the spirit and ingenuity of the Wright-Ryan team.
Today, under the seasoned leadership of John Ryan and an experienced management team, supported by a 100% employee-ownership structure, Wright-Ryan works to help commercial and residential clients achieve their goals through insightful advice, innovative strategies, and consistent support throughout the building lifecycle.

Because the firm is collaborative and focused on the unique needs of each client, Wright-Ryan doesn’t believe in force-fit plans or a one-size-fits-all project approach. Instead, the team listens to clients, creates options tailored specifically to their objectives, and partners to hone those options to the best possible solutions. To help ensure efficient delivery, Wright-Ryan offers a range of dedicated services:
Regardless of the service that Wright-Ryan employs on a job, the team believes that construction is a business of relationships. The firm embraces a core set of values that guides everything it does:
One example of the company’s values-driven approach is the priority that Wright-Ryan places on sustaining the natural environment. Wright-Ryan has been at the forefront of sustainable construction for over 20 years, beginning with the ground-breaking Gilsland Farm Maine Audubon Environmental Center in Falmouth. Since that time, the firm has built dozens of highly efficient buildings, including the first LEED Platinum home in the Northeast (Cranberry Ridge in Freeport), the first affordable multi-family building in Maine to achieve LEED Platinum (Avesta Housing’s Oak Street Lofts in Portland), and multiple large-scale projects that have been constructed according to the Passive House (PHIUS) standard.
Consistently recognized as an employer of choice, Wright-Ryan values the contributions of all employee owners, project team members, and industry partners. In addition, the firm is proud that women represent roughly 15% of the company’s workforce – far more than the construction industry’s national average of 9%. Wright-Ryan works to create and support opportunities for women as a key part of fostering a new generation of leaders. In fact, over 45% of all women at Wright-Ryan serve in senior leadership roles.
While much has changed since Tom and John opened their business 35 years ago, at least one core element remains today. In 2019, the values that have guided Wright-Ryan are as felt and strongly practiced each day as ever. It is for this reason that clients and communities can look forward to the same excellence and quality, consistently delivered, for another 35 years – and beyond.
