$11M to fund Richmond bridge replacement
The U.S. Department of Transportation will award Maine nearly $11 million to help replace a deteriorating bridge between Richmond and Dresden.
The $10.8 million competitive grant funding is being provided through the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER, program, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, who is on the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee. Collins visited the 80-year-old bridge, which carries traffic over Route 197, earlier this month with Maine DOT officials and said she was "truly alarmed" about its condition. The Maine DOT lists replacement of the Richmond-Dresden Bridge as one of its top infrastructure priorities.
The TIGER funding, along with existing federal funds, will pay for about half of the project's total cost of $24.9 million, with the state covering the other half. A new bridge is expected to be built by December 2015.
