Maine still trails the rest of the country when it comes to college enrollment and graduation, according to a new report from the Mitchell Institute.
Only 60% of high school graduates are enrolling in college after one year, below the national average of 68%. The state's public university graduation rate in 2009 was 51%, compared with the national average of 56%, and the community college graduation rate of 25% was also below the national average of 29%. The number of students who remained in college after one year in 2009 was above the national average. Maine's high school graduation rate has continued to increase over the last 10 years and at 82% is higher than the national average of 70%. In Maine, 5% of working adults in 2009 were enrolled in college versus 7% around the country, according to the report.
In related news, U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud also recently announced that Maine is second in the nation for the highest amount of college debt per graduating student, according to Business Week. He said Mainers have an average of $29,983 in college debt, putting the state behind only New Hampshire, according to data from the Institute for College Access and Success.
