$125M tidal energy project proposed for Cobscook Bay
Halcyon Tidal Power, an Augusta-based company, will be meeting with state and federal regulators in Bangor this week to discuss the technical aspects of a proposed $125 million tidal energy project in Cobscook Bay. A separate meeting also will be held with local residents in the Pembroke town office on Friday from noon to 2 p.m., according to the company’s website.
The Portland Press Herald reported that the company wants to build a 1,616-foot tidal “barrage” in a cove where the Pennamaquan River meets Cobscook Bay to demonstrate the effectiveness of its technology. The proposed project in Washington County would generate electricity for more than 13,000 homes, the newspaper reported.
The company, which expects to be able to generate electricity at market rates, intends to negotiate a power-purchase contract and be online by 2018, the newspaper reported.
The company describes its proposed tidal structure, which would extend across the river between Hershey Point and Leighton Point, as an impoundment structure that would be fully visible at low tide and have both “the appearance and function of a footbridge.”
