Pioneer Plastics Corp. in Auburn, a subsidiary of Panolam Industries International, is expected to pick up nearly 140 new jobs as a result of Panolam closing its manufacturing operations in South Carolina and moving the production to Maine.
The Maine Department of Economic and Community Development announced the move in a press release Monday, stating that it had provided state incentives to both Pioneer and Panolam “to help facilitate the movement of jobs and the corresponding investment.”
The Bangor Daily News reported that under the state’s Pine Tree Development Zone program those incentives could include a 100% credit on corporate income taxes due one to five years after the expansion, sales tax exemption on personal property purchases for 10 years and an annual payment of 80% of the state withholding taxes that employees meeting certain wage requirements pay to the state.
“Maine is a terrific place to do business and we are very pleased to grow our operations, and more importantly add talent to our already strong team at our Auburn Plant,” Al Kabus, Panolam’s president and CEO, said in the Maine DECD press release. “Our new investment in Maine means that our Auburn facility will remain competitive and well-positioned for long term growth.”
Panolam purchased Pioneer Plastics in 1999 and has invested millions of dollars in its Auburn plant since then, according to the press release. Prior to Panolam’s acquisition of Pioneer, the company produced only thermally fused laminate. Panolam now produces an extensive line of high-pressure laminates, thermo-fused laminates, fiberglass reinforced laminates, and other specialty products available in hundreds of colors and styles under the well-known Panolam, Nevamar, Pionite, Pluswood, Conolite, and other brand names.
All of Panolam’s materials are manufactured in North America.
