$16M headed to Kittery shipyard

The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery is receiving a $16 million investment from the U.S. Navy for modernization work.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe announced Friday that the Department of the Navy is funding construction and modernization work at the shipyard's dry dock No. 1, one of three dry docks used for submarine engineering overhauls, according to a press release. In November, the senators expressed concerns over the shipyard's reliance on congressionally directed funding to the director of the president's Office of Management and Budget, saying a shortfall of congressional funding would compromise the Navy facility.

A recent report from the Government Accountability Office pegged the backlog of needed facility improvements at the shipyard at $513 million, according to the release.
